5 reasons why you do not need to switch from DVD to Blu-ray

I have been asked many times by people should I get blue ray, so I wrote this article

The answer on if someone should buy blue ray depends on the person. If you are the kind of person who is worried about money then the answer is no. If you have the money Blu-ray players are great and the movies have never looked better. If you are worried about money then there are five great reasons not to Blu-ray.

The first reason not to get blue ray is the format wars are not over HD DVD may have failed to take over your living room but downloading has not. Downloading Movies and Music is gaining popularity and The best part is that you do not have to worry about where to keep the disks.

The second example is that Downloading is becoming extremely popular an example is Netflix downloading service. And If you do not have the money to buy a Blu-ray player don't because there is reason to believe that digital download may replace having a disk format at all.

The third example is that Players are still really expensive. At the time that this article was written the cheapest player is $400. The better players are more expensive but they also connect to the internet so you may watch movies on Netflix. If you do not have $400 to spend on a player then it might be a better idea to wait until the players at least go down in price to $200 to $100.

The fourth example is that DVD is enough the cheapest that one can get a DVD player for is $20 - $40 and studies show that with a decent DVD player you can watch a DVD on up to a 32 inch Screen TV with no pixelization. So unless you have a 100 inch TV you can afford to wait on buying a Blu-ray player.

The last example is that High Def studies show that 3 out of 4 people have been reported not knowing the difference between a HD image on a HD TV and a Low Def image on a HD TV. Since Blu-ray has around 6 times the resolution of DVD this study brings up the question "Do you even need to switch to Blu-ray?

reasons recap

The end result is that if you are worried about the cost of Blu-ray players I would not suggest buying one yet for 5 main reasons.

  1. The format wars is not over
  2. Downloading is becoming extremely popular
  3. Players are still really expensive
  4. DVD is enough for most people
  5. most people can not tell the difference between High Def and Low Def
