The dangers of Sopa

Sopa stands for the Stop Online Piracy act. It is a attempt by the US congress to Stop the Piracy of movies and music. In this article I will tell you why the US Government is creating Sopa. How Sopa would stop people from illegally download movies and Music. And finally I will say Why Sopa Should not pass. Sopa should not be allowed to pass.

The US Government is creating Sopa to try to stop The Piracy of Music and Movies. Every year Movie Studios and Music Labels lose billions of Dollars of lost revenue due to piracy. Piracy is when someone downloads Movies or Music without paying for it. This is money that could be used to pay for the cost of Making the Movies and Music but instead the people who made it get nothing. Piracy has grown to such a big problem that every year Movie Studios and Record labels lose billions of dollars because of it, and the US government’s solution to Piracy is Sopa. Normally it would be impossible to stop everyone from illegally downloading Movies and Music but with every problem is a solution.

The solution that the US Government came up with to stop people from downloading Copyrighted Material is the same Method that is used in countries like China. Under Sopa the government would be allowed to search the web for websites that allow the user to download and watch copyrighted Material without paying for it and put those websites on a blacklist. Once a Website is on a blacklist Search Engines like google would have to Block someone from visiting the offending site. It does not stop there either, Web browsers like internet Explorer and Firefox would have to block people from accessing the site as well, so if someone goes into the Address bar and types out the name of a web site, they still could not visit it. Any Web browser and Search engine that does not block the Offending Web sites will be prosecuted as Aiding in The crime of Piracy. Although this may fix the problem Opponents say that it is a step to far and that there are too many flaws in it, So it should not be allowed to pass.

There are many good things that Sopa can do to stop Piracy Opponents of Sopa say that the reward does not justify the consequences of Sopa being allowed to pass. The first Problem with Sopa is that Some people fear that it may give to much power to the Government. They feel like if the Government is left unchecked the Government may not only block Websites that Sopa was meant to block but that the Government may block other web sites that are posting bad things about the Government. Other People feel that this may cripple small businesses. One Main Argument against Sopa is that the internet has always been about the free exchange of ideas and information, and they feel that Sopa would ruin that legacy. Some people do not like the sound of the Government Monitoring what Americans are seeing on the net. Either way there is many reasons why Sopa should not pass.
